The companies experience in working with university graduates and students was discussed at the Gaidar Forum (VIDEO)

On the third day of the Gaidar Forum, January 17, a discussion was held on the problem of staff shortage. The experts discussed current approaches and solutions used to select young professionals and to prepare them for the reality of the labour market.

The following experts took part in an open dialogue: Yelena Kalugina, Head of Career Development Center, RANEPA, Galina Sedykh, HR Director in Henkel Russia & East Cluster, Julia Zharik, HR Director of Kaluga Branch of L’OREAL CJSC, Maria Shelamova, HR Director of SCA HYGIENE PRODUCTS RUSSIA, Elena Lopatova, HR Manager for Russia and Kazakhstan, HR Business Partner of HP Inc. LLC in Eastern Europe, Olga Gerasimova, HR Country Manager, Paulig Russia, and Natalia Maksimova, the Head of the Career Center of NUST MISIS.

Julia Zharik shared the experience of cooperation of the branch production of L'OREAL CJSC with young professionals from universities of the Kaluga region. “For four years we have been hiring graduates from the Obninsk Institute for Nuclear Power Engineering (OINPE), and they are successfully working on the different positions, such as ecologists, laboratory technicians and engineers. They actively assist us in the implementation of projects that are important for production,” said the expert. Julia Zharik also noted the importance of the mutual desire of students and the company representatives to cooperate productively with each other.

The problem of insufficient communication between career centers and employers was raised by Natalia Maksimova. According to the expert, the solution could be the creation of so-called schools of ambassadors, under which companies support students who perform their tasks on the basis of their university by scholarships, thereby becoming the link between the university and the employer.

Yelena Kalugina noted that the Career Center should position itself as a navigator which can tell students their possible professional direction and facilitate their employment. “The main task of career centers in each university is to ask the opinion of the students themselves more often and give them the freedom to state their goals and methods for their implementation. Thus, it will be much easier to provide them with these opportunities,” the expert says.

Olga Gerasimova outlined the expectations of her company from university graduates applying for the jobs. “The perfect applicant for an employer is an inquisitive, proactive, responsible and committed to excellence person who generates and offers new ideas,” explained the expert. It is important for a successful employee, according to Olga Gerasimova, to grow with the company, understand its mission and try to stick to it.

Elena Lopatova noted that academic education plays an important role, but such qualities as the desire to improve interpersonal communication, general erudition and the ability to apply knowledge at the right time are necessary in the reality of modern business. “As a company operating in the field of IT-technologies, we primarily pay attention to the ability to analyze information and the ability to choose the essentials,” the specialist emphasized.

Galina Sedykh told about increasing the chances of finding a desired job and increasing the relevance in the labor market. “In order for a student’s resume not to be in the employer's shelf for years, something must stand out from the general mass of applicants. For example, you can clearly express yourself by participating in competitions of international companies and research projects,” Galina Sedykh emphasized.

Maria Shelamova, the representative of SCA HYGIENE PRODUCTS RUSSIA, spoke about three types of her company's programs aimed at young people: summer internships, a two-year school of leadership development, and a program aimed at educational guidance for schoolchildren. “These tools successfully help us to find new talents from different parts of the country,” the specialist notes.

One of the main conclusions of the discussion is that attracting students and recent graduates is a promising solution to the problem of shortages in the labor market. Improving the work of career centers, improving their communication with employers and the correct approach of young professionals themselves will lead to positive results.
