Protons Against Cancer

Today, nuclear medicine is one of the fastest growing areas of medicine. Experts discussed the development prospects of this sector in Russia on the second day of the Gaidar Forum 2020 as part of the panel discussion called “Nuclear Technologies in the Service of the Medicine of the Future”. During the discussion, experts touched on personnel and interdisciplinary issues, priority areas for the development of infrastructure and logistics.

“Russia today is competitive in the most high-tech science intensive industries, in those where we have either a few or no competitors. First of all, we are talking about the nuclear industry,” said Mikhail Kovalchuk, President of the Kurchatov Institute National Research Center, opening the discussion. According to him, this was a consequence of the Soviet nuclear project, which created the basis for the development of many science intensive areas. He also drew the attention of the discussion participants to the fact that in accordance with the President’s decree and the program prepared by the Government, a powerful infrastructure program was launched in Russia this year to create world-class mega-installations, which have no analogues in the world. Thanks to this, in the next 5–8 years, Russia will receive the latest research infrastructure, which is not found anywhere in the world.

According to Sergey Tsyba, First Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation, there are all prerequisites for the development of this high-tech area in the Russian Federation, given that all the main components for the introduction of such technologies in Russian health care already exist.

According to Simon Matskeplishvili, almost everything that cardiology knows about the heart was obtained through nuclear medicine methods. “I see how nuclear technology will allow me, as a doctor, to more accurately diagnose illnesses and help people quicker,” he said.

“The amount of knowledge in nuclear medicine is growing incrementally. At the moment, new treatment regimens have already appeared. And doctors should already think ahead and change the approach to diagnosis and treatment. This is a rather serious challenge,” said Vladislav Baranov, summing up the results of his speech.

The session was also attended by Mikhail Piradov, Director, Scientific Center of Neurology, Vladislav Baranov, Director General, NOMECO JSC, Yves Yongen, IBA Founder, Nikolay Tyurin, Scientific Director, Institute of High Energy Physics, Sergey Notov, president of MedInvestGroup LLC.
