Participants of the Gaidar Forum believe that it is the Russian business that will begin to solve global environmental problems
The role of small, medium-size and large business in the social and ecological environment was discussed at the 11th Gaidar Forum being held at the Presidential Academy. Various options to address global problems were also presented at the session named “The inconvenient truth: A pragmatic view of business environmental responsibility”.
Mikhail Zaytsev, Discussion Moderator; Deputy Director of the Institute of Business Studies (IBS), RANEPA, noted the special topicality of the discussed subject for the whole world. He also presented the book Balancing Green by speaker Yossi Sheffi, Professor at MIT.
Yossi Sheffi took the floor himself to analyze environmental friendliness and industrialization trends based on cases of large multinational companies, such as Coca-Cola, Apple, Microsoft, Ford. The MIT Professor noted: “If all of us stop emitting greenhouse gases tomorrow, this won’t change the situation. 50–80% population exist on less than $5 per day. Industrialization lifted milliards of people out of poverty, while emissions grew by 2000%.”
The speaker believes that solution for this problem lies in the Russian Federation that can deal with emission reduction and carbon pickup. “Russia can become exactly the solution! I wrote about this in the preface to the Russian version of the book.”
Danica Purg, President, CEEMAN, continued clarification on the problem, having noted the responsibility of business schools for what is happening today and for the future situation. “We must teach people that everything begins with small steps and then comes to a larger level.” When teaching, the major emphasis shall be built on the reasonable use of resources and sustainable development, Ms. Purg supposes.
Mikhail Andronov, President of Rusenergosbyt, told how to make money out of ecology, to dispel the myth that the state is allegedly obtruding renewable energy sources (RES) on the business: “In Russia, only large RES enjoy support at the government level.”
During his speech, Mikhail Andronov mentioned the microgeneration law, touched on the demand control problem and told about the Green Certificates document, having said that: “This does not solve global problems, but any real steps are highly helpful! There are ways how to make money out of ecology, let’s grow reach all together!”
The expert discussion was concluded by Andrew Main Wilson, CEO, AMBA, who built his speech on his own experience of visits to 177 countries: “People all over the world have one feature in common: they believe that their children will live better than parents.”
The AMBA CEO noted the impact of the social responsibility as exemplified by five stack-holders: consumers, enterprises, teachers, governments, mass media. These very factors are the essential in addressing environmental problems.
