Global trends in agro-industrial field (VIDEO)

The expert discussion “Global trends in the agro-industrial field: challenges and opportunities for Russia” was opened by its moderator, Elmira Krylatykh, Head, the Enterprise Management Chair, GSCM RANEPA. The speakers discussed the main goals and objectives that Russia has to solve in agricultural production.

There has been a serious breakthrough in the agro-industrial complex of the Russian Federation: the country is almost completely provided with basic foodstuffs. Transition to an export model of development is confirmation of positive developments and emergence of the agri-food sector to a new level.

Ivan Ushachev, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Economics, Professor, Honored Worker of Science of the Russian Federation, became the leading speaker. In his speech, he dwelled on the reorganization of agrarian institutions. The Federal Scientific Center of Agrarian Economy and Social Development of Rural Territories was established on the basis of three institutions with the aim of the scientific forces uniting. According to the speaker, it is necessary to bring agricultural exports to $ 45 billion, and to give new momentum to the development of small and medium-sized businesses in the countryside, cooperation, and digital changes in the agro-industrial complex. He also focused on the problem of poverty in the country, which is particularly acute in rural settlements. In addition, the President of the Russian Federation set the task of joining the five largest world economies, to a certain extent this also applies to the agro-industrial complex.

Solution of these tasks not only qualitatively changes the role of Russia in the world agricultural production, it requires a deep understanding of the global world and domestic Russian processes in the agri-food sector.

Also, the doctor of economics estimated the price relations in the agro-industrial complex for the period from 2013 to 2017 and noted that the increase in prices in agriculture was 35%, for industrial goods purchased – 40%, and in the food industry – 44%, while consumer prices for food increased by 52%. At the end of his speech, the speaker noted that during this five-year period there was a significant disparity in the economy.

The next person to share his opinion on this topic was Alexey Kaulbars, auditor of the Accounts Chamber of the Russian Federation. The development of the agro-industrial complex is one of the drivers of the economy. Only 10 years ago, the average crop in Russia amounted to 80 million tons of grain, today the crop is 75 million tons per year; taking into account the influence of weather conditions on crop fluctuations, these figures indicate stability, which is an undoubted success. In addition, the speaker noted that the feed mill production has grown to 5 million tons of grain, this growth is associated with an increase in livestock production. He named two factors that could be drivers in the grain market – they are deep processing of grain and its export.

In the second part of the report, the speaker particularly clearly highlighted that today our country has about 60 million tons of port capacity in agriculture, which indicates success in this area.

The auditor of the Accounts Chamber also highlighted problems relating to elevator capacities in the territories and lack of railways availability, which significantly slows down progress and leads to higher prices for export and domestic transportation.

Drawing a parallel with the US agrarian sector, Oleg Ovchinnikov, head of the Center for Agrarian Problems of the Institute of the USA and Canada, RAS, questioned the thesis that a real breakthrough had occurred in the Russian agro-industrial complex. According to him, the former statistics are currently being re-evaluated.
