Gaidar Forum participants discussed Russian-Spanish relations

Diplomatic relations between Russia and Spain have been carefully developed for the last forty years. Today, the two countries are linked not only by mutually beneficial cooperation in the fields of education, tourism and industry, but by the interpenetration of cultures. The Gaidar Forum became a platform for the discussion of a sensitive issue, relations between Russia and the European Union.

The Franco Era and the Cold War had a negative impact on bilateral relations, which had not been established until 1997. Both Russia and Spain had gone through difficult internal political transitions: the post-Franco period of the 1970-80s for Spain and the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, for Russia. This similarity between the two nations’ stories has generated a special understanding between them and prompted them to improve relations.
