In 1979 he defended his PhD thesis on the specialty "Cybernetics and Information Theory", in 1993 - his doctoral dissertation in the field of historiography, source study and methods of historical research. In the 1990s he was invited to take part in the programs of advanced training at Harvard University, Stanford University, Max-Planck-Institut fuer Geschichte.

He is the author of seven monographsin the field of Russia’s economic history and methodology of historical research, co-chairman of the Academic Council of the Russian Academy of Sciences on economic history (since 2014), member of editorial boards of several academic journals, including "Historical Social Research", "Social Evolution and History", "Cliodynamics: The Journal of Theoretical and Mathematical History", "Economic History" (Russian journal), editor-in-chief of the journal "Istoricheskaia Informatica", co-editor of the Russian Yearbook "Economic History".

In 1998-2006 he was a member of the Executive Committee of the International Association for Economic History (IEHA).
