Jorge Braga de Macedo

Jorge Braga de Macedo, signatory of the Maastricht Treaty, is an international macroeconomist based in Lisbon with a career in public service and private enterprise in Europe, North America and Africa and a regular presence in the media.
Distinguished Fellow at the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) in Waterloo, Ontario; member of the Lisbon Academy of Science, the Royal Academy of Belgium and the Science Council of the Catholic University of Angola; Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) in Cambridge, Massachusetts and Research Fellow at the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) in London, he has been Professor at Nova School of Business and Economics since 1996 and Director of its Centre for Globalization and Governance since 2008.
He chairs the General Assembly of the Madeira Development Society and is also member of the General and Supervisory Board of EDP, the largest Portuguese company. He has been the International Secretary of the Social Democratic Party since 2010 and serves in boards of non-governmental organizations, such as the League of Friends of the Tropical Botanical Garden and the Estoril Institute for Global Dialogue.
He served as Director for National Economies at the European Commission in Brussels, Minister of Finance and chair of the Ecofin Council during the first Portuguese presidency. He also chaired the Parliamentary Committee for European Affairs and was the last President of the OECD Development Centre in Paris and of the Tropical Research Institute (IICT) in Lisbon.
