Building of Memory: Generations, Past and Present of Russia (VIDEO)
The views of various generations on Russian society were discussed within the framework of the first day of the Gaidar Forum. The discussion was based on the formation of the architectural appearance of cities, the economic and social results of the country's development in the postwar period, the views and opinions of generations that came of age during the period of perestroika.
Yuri Slezkine, a professor at the University of California at Berkeley, raised the questions about Soviet history. He listed prominent statesmen such as Khrushchev , Gromyko, Lenin, and others, stressing that these people were united primarily by their origin and similar views on politics, economics, and social issues.
According to Sergey Zuev, Dean of the School of Public Policy of RANEPA, the education system and culture are in complex relations. “Despite this, education is a part of culture, since this mechanism translates all established cultural paradigms that need to be passed on to the next generation,” the speaker said. He spoke about the non-standard training program for Russia – Liberal Arts College. Liberal education is focused on teaching the humanities and social sciences, but also includes the study of the exact sciences, such as mathematics.
Nina Tumarkin, Dean of the Historic Department of Wellesley College, Harvard University, paid special attention to the soldiers who are buried in mass graves, and those who are still missing. Strangely enough, according to the statistics, it is the younger generation that is most interested in finding any information about relatives killed in the war. She highlighted the project "Immortal Regiment", which clearly showed special attitude of very young Russians to the memory of their ancestors who died in the war.
Grigory Yudin, Scientific Director of the Program "Political Philosophy" of the Moscow Higher School of Social and Economic Sciences, devoted his report to various types of memory. And Mikhail Anipkin, Director of Alexander Consultancy Limited, spoke with great interest about the anthropological portrait of the last Soviet generation.
