An expert discussion at the Gaidar Forum to be devoted to the centenary of the Russian Revolution
The year 2017 marks the centenary of the Russian Revolution, an event which turned the role of the world and Russian history. At the Gaidar Forum, an expert discussion to be held with the participation of international experts in the field of Russian history and economy on the second day of the Forum, January 13, will be devoted to this landmark.
The panelists shall include: Robert Service, Emeritus Professor of Russian History, University of Oxford; George Lawson, Associate Professor, Department of International Relations, LSE; Branko Milanović, Professor, City University of New York; Lead Economist, the World Bank (1991-2013). Carol Leonard, Professor, Director, Center for Russian Studies, Institute of Social Science, RANEPA shall be moderator of the meeting.
The experts will discuss whether the events of February 1917 provided a model for the color revolutions in Central and Eastern Europe. In addition, they will try to answer the question whether the Russian Revolution of 1917 was built on or buried 19th century concepts of revolution. The discussion will also dwell on the role of inequality and power in 20th century revolutions.
The point at issue shall be the immediate social movements that led up to regime collapse, the role of World War I and the impact of structural factors and political opposition on the revolution of 1917. The consequences of events of February 1917 bear similarities to later color revolutions globally. However, in Russia, the struggle for power continued and the new democratic power, the Provisional Government, proved vulnerable to ongoing opposition from soldiers, returning from their defeat in World War I, peasants who aspired for more land in the village, growing demands for autonomy from the borderlands and an organized revolutionary movement in St Petersburg.
