Agricultural sector sustainability discussed at Gaidar Forum
On January 17, an expert discussion of sustainable development of the food and agriculture sector in modern Russia was held as part of the 2018 Gaidar Forum, Russia and the World: Values and Virtues.
The discussion focused on effective use of natural resources, agricultural losses and food waste. The participants also considered utilization of food waste, which is growing in proportion to the world population. They assessed the approach to and goals of efficient use of natural resources, modern agriculture’s impact on the future development of the national economy, and dealing with threats to the sustainability of global development.
The keynote report was delivered by Yevgenia Serova, Head of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Office in Moscow.
“The world has come to a realization that, for its longterm development, for us to have enough resources for our children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, we must develop the economy and social life in a different way,” the expert said.
Therefore, we should not overlook the main trends of modernity, namely, the acceleration of urbanization, climate change, limited natural resources, since this puts additional requirements on the industry.
